British Life: Remembrance Day 國殤紀念日

The red poppy is a symbol of Remembrance Day and wearing one around this time of year is a long-standing tradition in the UK.

Remembrance Day is on 11th November every year. It marks the day when World War I ended and reminds us of the men and women who have served in wars and conflicts around the world, as well as those who have sacrificed their lives.

The red poppy became a symbol of remembrance and hope when poppies began to grow in the World War I battlefields in Flanders, Belgium (a battlefield during the war).

Your child may have learnt about this in school through the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John Mcrae.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In Flanders Fields by John Mcrae

The Royal British Legion, a charity, runs the Poppy Appeal every year to support serving and ex-serving men and women, and their families. People can purchase a poppy to show their support.

This is why every year around this time, poppies appear everywhere!
