Mince pies – Small tarts filled with dried fruit.
Queen’s Speech/King’s Speech – A speech given by the King or Queen on Christmas Day address to the whole nation which is aired on TV. Many families tune in to listen to the monarch reflect on the past year and looks ahead to the new year.
Crimbo / Xmas – Commonly used words that mean ‘Christmas’.
Tinsel – A long shiny decoration used to decorate trees and other areas at Christmas.
Bauble – A colourful, round ornament which is hung on a Christmas tree.
Santa’s Grotto – A place where a child can meet Santa Claus and get a small present. They are usually located in shopping centres and at Christmas markets.
Mulled wine – A winter drink made from heated wine with added spices such as cinnamon and orange peel. They are usually sold at Christmas markets.
Pantomime (panto) – A funny theatre show where the actors engage with the audience. It’s a unique theatre experience for the whole family!
Wreath – A circular decoration used to decorate doors of homes. They are made of evergreen leaves, pine cones, bows, berries, and other decorations.
Advent calendar – A calendar with doors on them which is opened every day leading up to Christmas. Behind each door is a treat, usually chocolate but can be other things such as beauty products and teabags.
Stocking – A big sock made of red and white fabric, usually hung up to be filled with small gifts.
Christmas cracker – A fun cardboard decoration that goes bang! It is a tradition to lay them on the table to open at Christmas dinner. Two people pull on it to see who can get the little gift inside. They usually have a joke and paper hat.
Mistletoe – A plant usually hung above a door. If you find yourself standing under a mistletoe, you are expected to give a kiss.
Fairy lights – A string of lights used to decorate and brighten up homes, trees and streets.
Yule log – A delicious chocolate cake shaped like a tree log. They are usually sprinkled with icing sugar to represent snow. It is usually shared during Christmas celebrations.
Stuffing – A mixture of breadcrumb and sausage meat usually served with a turkey or chicken.
Christmas dinner – A festive meal usually cooked at home involving roasted meats such as beef and turkey served with a variety of vegetables.
Boxing Day – The day after Christmas (26th December). It is a public holiday and is usually spent with family or out shopping for Christmas sales, known as ‘Boxing Day sales’.
