How to speak to your child’s teacher

Teachers want you to be involved in your child’s learning.

If you have questions or worries about your child’s learning or wellbeing, you can meet the teacher.

  • Book an appointment through the school office.
  • If you need help understanding English, you can bring someone with you to translate, just let the office know.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat things or explain them again if you don’t understand. They are there to help!

Call the school or visit the office today to make an appointment!

Remember, talking to the teacher is important for your child’s success in school.

What advice would you give to a parent who wants to speak to their child’s teacher but isn’t sure if they can or how to?

All teachers at primary and secondary schools would love all parents to show an interest in their child’s learning.

If an appointment to meet the teacher is made through the appropriate channels and the meetings are not too frequent or lengthy, class and subject teachers are usually happy to speak to parents if they have questions or are concerned about their child.

If you are worried about your spoken English and you need someone to come with you to translate, mention this when you make the appointment too. The teacher then knows who they are expecting at the meeting and will understand. If you need the teacher to repeat something that you maybe didn’t understand, say, “Please could you say that again. I didn’t understand what you meant.” Let them know if you find it difficult to explain yourself or don’t understand a response. They are teachers and are used to helping, supporting and explaining.

Pick up the phone or visit the school office today and make the appointment if you need to speak with your child’s teacher!

This question was asked by one of our parents during our recent webinar ‘Unlocking the Power of Parent-Teacher Communication‘ and was answered by a very experienced primary school teacher who has also held a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) role.
